DLA Piper Strengthens Client Relationships in Chicago

For many years, DLA Piper has partnered with the Chicago Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) to build relationships with clients and strengthen the firm's brand in Chicago. As a result of this partnership and our platinum sponsorship of the ACC, we were given the opportunity to invite clients to the ACC Annual Celebration Dinner featuring Dan Rather, in addition to hosting a half-day CLE event for ACC members.

Clients meet Dan Rather
On September 16, DLA Piper clients had the opportunity to meet broadcast journalist Dan Rather, keynote speaker at the ACC Chicago Annual Celebration Dinner. Mr. Rather spoke about his career in broadcasting and his new memoir.

CLE event covers best practices for cybersecurity
On October 8, DLA Piper hosted a half-day CLE presentation of In a Flash! (A Lesson in Cybersecurity) with the Chicago Chapter of the ACC. More than 120 lawyers attended the event. Speakers included moderator Christina Martini (Chicago) and panelists Jennifer Kashatus (Washington, DC), Diane Nobles (VP Global Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc.), Vinny Sanchez (Los Angeles) and Shahryar Shaghaghi (BDO Consulting Managing Director).

In a Flash!, DLA Piper's latest dramatic film, depicts a fictional corporation dealing with multiple issues: cybergovernance, cyber-risk management, security protocols, incident response plans, and the corresponding legal and regulatory environment faced by general counsel.

Panelists discussed preventative measures the company could have taken, such as:
• Having a comprehensive and pre-tested disaster recovery program with an appropriate data backup
• Knowing best practices for security training, including onboarding and annual training
• Ensuring employees understand their roles and responsibilities for safeguarding sensitive data

Panelists also covered ways to regain clients’ trust following a breach, which can be done by explaining:
• How the incident occurred
• Steps taken to prevent it from recurring
• Potential costs associated with breach remediation

“Cybersecurity is a topic of great interest to general counsel and their in-house legal teams," said Christina. "We had terrific attendance from many different companies across the Chicago Chapter, and the feedback on the program has been very positive.”
